About Me

Hello. My name is Emily, and I live in North Carolina. I am an English major at UNCG. My hobbies include reading (obviously), cooking and baking, political activism, surfing the internet, and hanging out with my friends. I am currently dating a wonderful boy who is a music major and generally nice guy. He is a graduate student in composition, and plays the organ and the guitar.

This blog focuses on reviewing literary fiction and classics, including books I read for pleasure, for school, and in my book groups. Though that is my current focus, this blog began as a place to review books written by women. I noticed in my own reading habits, as well as in the habits of my friends, and of the larger reading and reviewing community as a whole, a large difference in the number of books read that were written by males vs females. Since I know that literary talent is not determined by gender, I concluded that this discrepancy must be from societal or historical causes. I wanted to do my part to end this discrepancy, and so I resolved to read only books written by women for a period of time and to review them, in hopes that other people would also read them. Sadly, now that I have started my English degree, I am unable to carry out that resolution. Still, I try to focus on books by women, and my reviews will often include the way female characters and gender roles were treated in the book.

I am, if you can't tell by the subject of my blog, a feminist. I believe very strongly that people of all genders and sexes are equal, and should have equal opportunities in life. I oppose societal gender roles because they are harmful to women, men, and people who do not conform to the gender binary. I try to be an LGBT ally, and strongly support LGBT equality, including gay marriage and adoption. I am also an atheist, and believe in the separation of church and state. To put it simply, I am for equality in all aspects. That should make it clear that racist, misogynistic, homophobic, or any other discriminatory comments of any kind will not be tolerated on my blog. Of course, with the kind of people who read my blog, I don't foresee that as being a problem, but I thought I should put it out there just in case.

Now, all that serious stuff said, let me just say that I absolutely love to have fun. The blogging community is a great place to meet new people and make new connections. I am so excited to meet all of you, and I can't wait to talk about books and reading and whatever else pops into our heads. So please, leave comments, recommendations, and links to your blogs. I'd love to read them!

Have a wonderful day, and happy reading!
